2048 CLASSIC
2048 Classic is for players who want the stricter original-style game: a 4×4 board, meaningful moves and no Undo. Your Classic game and best score are saved separately on this device, so they never overwrite the standard 4×4 mode.
How is 2048 Classic different from the standard 4×4 mode?
Both use the same 4×4 board and merging rules. The difference is Undo: Classic does not have it. A bad move has to be repaired with later moves, which keeps the more demanding feel of the classic game.
A steadier way to play Classic
Keep your largest tile in one corner and line up the next-largest values along the same edge. Avoid direction changes that break that chain. With no Undo, it pays to check whether the next move will still leave a merge or a safe empty cell before you swipe.
Who created 2048? The game’s origin and history
2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli. This website is an independent implementation for playing 2048 on the web; it is not the official website of the original game creator. 2048 origin
2048 Classic questions
Does 2048 Classic have Undo?
No. Undo is deliberately disabled in Classic. Use the standard 2048 4×4 mode if you want a one-move Undo.
Does Classic share scores with the standard 4×4 mode?
No. The current game, best score and statistics for Classic are stored separately from the standard 4×4 mode.
Can I keep playing after reaching 2048?
Yes. After making the 2048 tile you can continue toward 4096, 8192 and beyond.
Can Classic use a 5×5, 6×6 or larger board?
No. 2048 Classic always uses a 4×4 board. Larger boards are separate game modes on this site.
How to play 2048 Classic with no Undo
Classic keeps the 4×4 board and familiar merging rules but removes Undo. That changes the decision cost: a swipe cannot be taken back, so preserving structure and checking the next board state matters more than chasing every immediate merge.
- Pick one corner for your largest tile and avoid the direction that would pull that tile away from its edge.
- Keep the row or column beside the anchor ordered from larger to smaller values so new tiles have a predictable path into the chain.
- Before a risky swipe, check whether the move leaves at least one empty cell or an obvious merge. In Classic, recovery has to happen through future moves.
Is this the original 2048 game?
This is an independent original-style implementation, not Gabriele Cirulli’s official website. It reproduces the familiar 4×4, no-Undo style for players who want a stricter baseline. The attribution page links to the original project and explains the relationship clearly.

Classic vs standard 4×4
Both pages use a 4×4 board, but standard mode includes one-move Undo while Classic does not. Their current games, scores and statistics are stored separately, so using one mode never overwrites the other.

Board-size modes use classic 2048 merging, while variants such as Fibonacci change the merge rule itself. Pick the challenge that matches how you want to play.
